It is important to never operate if the saw hasn't been lubricated with saw chain oil. Doing so is dangerous and will result in damage to the chainsaw.
All Saw Chain Oils aren't the same and temperature conditions outside should be taken into account.
Different lubricants with completely different viscosities are required at different ambient temperatures. At lower temperatures you will need low viscosity oils in order to achieve a sufficient lubricating film. However, if the same low viscosity oil is used during the summer it will become even thinner due to the ambient temperatures alone, and as a result the lubricating film could break down, causing the chain to overheat and become damaged. In addition, the chain oil would burn and produce unnecessary pollutants.
